Reading Comprehension and Vipers

Reading comprehension is the ability to read text, process it and understand its meaning. Reading comprehension is a major focus of the English curriculum in school.

VIPERS

To support reading comprehension, we use an important teaching and learning resource called VIPERS.

VIPERS is an acronym to aid the recall of the 6 reading domains as part of the UK’s reading curriculum.  The use of VIPERS ensures that teachers ask, and pupils are familiar with, a range of key comprehension questions.

Pupils will be made familiar with these different aspects of comprehension so that they can use the different comprehension skills when reading a text.

Below are some useful resources to support the use of VIPERS as reading prompts and questions.
